Anywhere have returned! The sonic collective experimentation started by Christian Eric Beaulieu (Triclops! / Peace Creep), Cedric Bixler Zavala (The Mars Volta / Zavalaz), and Mike Watt (The Stooges / Minutemen) has expanded it’s identity, unveiling the much anticipated 4 song Olompali EP.

The lineup this time around features Dale Crover (the Melvins / Altamont), Krist Novoselic (Nirvana / Sweet 75), Jonathan Hischke (Hella / EV Kain), Ethan Miller (Comets On Fire / Feral Ohms), Toshi Kasai (Big Business / Altamont), Bret Constatino (Sleepy Sun), Matt Holliman (Sleepy Sun), Cyrus Comisky (Drunk Horse / Howlin Rain), and Christian Eric Beaulieu.

Feral Ohms ‘Living Junkyard’ 7″

Feral Ohms was formed in 2011 by three Bay Area underground rock vets from Comets on Fire, Drunk Horse, and Nudity. Loud, super-fuzzed, just over the border of psychedelia into a darker, harsher jungle. Doses of concrete basement West Coast 80s punk, 70s hairy bare-chested wall of amps festival rock, 90s Screaming Japanese underground and various other forms of scuzz, primitive, biker and outcast rock and roll mutations abound. There will be a one-time only pressing of 500!

As with all Valley King Records releases, the artwork is by Alan Forbes. The packaging is silkscreened and signed & numbered by Forbes. Each single will also come with an exclusive sticker!

The latest from local label Valley King, is the first release from Black Elk Medicine Band, the solo project of Isaiah Mitchell of recent aQ Record Of The Weekers Golden Void, as well as psych rock shredders Earthless, and in BEMB, at least on this single, Mitchell is joined by Phil Manley (Trans Am, Life Coach, The Fucking Champs, etc.) and John McBain of the mighty Monster Magnet (and Carlton Melton!). You’d never know it on the B side, which just happens to be the one we listened to first – a dark, brooding, seventies sounding psychedelic drift, swirling soft tangles of slow burn guitar shred smolder, draped over a thick, ominous sprawl of sinister synth buzz, sounding like Mitchell’s homage to Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain”, the same sort of dark psych brood, tense and emotional and moody.

But flip the record over, and Mitchell and crew let loose with a heady barrage of spaced out psych that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Golden Void or Earthless record. A simple skeletal programed rhythm pulses away beneath clouds of heavily flanged riffage, and yep, some seriously soaring heart of the sun shredding, sounding almost like a snippet of a much longer jam, fading in, the action already underway, the band locked into some seriously tripped out psychedelic mesmer, Mitchell laying down another blast of tangled super emotive guitar god leads, over a tranced out motorik background, eventually fading out, as if the actual jam, the one we just got a single side glimpse of, continued well on into the forever.

Local label Valley King are on fire, after singles by local space rockers Carlton Melton, SF psych stoners Golden Void, witchy Swedish rockers Spiders and Sweet Apple, the project of Witch’s Dave Sweetapple, comes this, the debut from L.A. supergroup Anywhere, which we have to say, we were a wee bit skeptical about. Not just because of the often bandied about ‘supergroup’ tag, but also cuz it seemed like a strange hodgepodge member-wise, Cedric Bixler Zavala of The Mars Volta and At The Drive In, Christian Eric Beaulieu of the late great Triclops!, Mike Watt of the Minutemen and fIREHOSE obviously, and finally Rachel Fannan from SF dreampsych combo Sleepy Sun. Weird right? The label explains how these folks all fell in together, but even then we weren’t sure what to expect, but whatever it was, it wasn’t this, a weird sort of psychedelic rhythmic acoustic guitar driven dronerock, laced with electronics, and tabla like percussion, a bit proggy and druggy and dreamy, the A side plays out like the first movement of an epic sidelong prog masterpiece, the guitars lush and shimmery, those tabla sound rhythms often run through glitched out effects, the melodies majestic and soaring, some classic sixties psych guitar laid over the top, it’s a shame it ends after only 5 minutes, when we had been plotting out the rest of the imagined song in our heads. Needless to say, it was a hugely pleasant surprise and had us hankering for more.

The B side adds vocals to the mix, Fannan’s hazy stoned croon, perfectly complimented by the warm, whirling acoustic strum and toy xylophone like percussion, the song ebbing and flowing in soft swells, even more than the first side, sounding like some lost sixties band, all Laurel Canyon, witchy folk flecked psychedelic classic rock, brooding and moody and darkly dreamy. Gorgeous stuff for sure, and here’s hoping they can manage a full length!

SPIDERS single out in March, pre-order now!

Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, SPIDERS mix garage punk and early hard rock with bluesy melodies. The band is fronted by Ann-Sofie Hoyles – a female lead singer possessing an awesome voice with attitude. In addition to that we find guitarist John Hoyes (from Witchcraft), drummer Axel Sjöberg (from Graveyard), and bass player Matteo Gambacorta (from Midwest) in the line-up. SPIDERS’ songs reveal the bands incredible songwriting prowess and the music is full of energy and raw rock riffs.

SPIDERS was formed in Gothenburg in February 2010. A few months later the band appeared at one of Sweden’s most successful music festivals, Way Out West. It was around this time SPIDERS for the first time as a band stepped into the studio with producer Don Ahlsterberg (The Soundtrack of Our Lives, International Noise Conspiracy, Jose Gonzalez) and started recording.

Carlton Melton single out this month!

CARLTON MELTON formed along the Mendocino County coastline in Northern California on the weekend of July 17th, 2008. The idea to play live, loud, improvised, experimental, instrumental, psychedelic music in a geodesic dome had been discussed for many years prior to this date. The opportunity came to fruition after the dome was completely rebuilt and the acoustic sounds inside were fully realized.

The music is recorded live inside the dome to analog and digital sources using omni-directional microphones. All music is improvised in the sense that no one really knows who or what is going to be played at any given time. There are no rehearsals, practices, demonstration tapes, second takes… what you hear is the first take… ” Hit It And Quit It ” as Funkadelic would prescribe. There are no studios. We record in Brian’s house and Brian happens to live in a geodesic dome.

It is understood this music is not for everyone. If you prefer top-notch, modern day production and crafty songwriting you may want to stop here. If you prefer old SST label cassette tapes or an early Spaceman 3 cassette you recently found wedged in the back seat of your car you may dig some of this… or perhaps you like to listen and gaze at an old David Crosby LP now and then.
